Shift4 is a US payments company that bundles card processing, a payment gateway, point-of-sale hardware and software integrations for merchants such as restaurants, venues and retailers. Its distinguishing technology is the breadth of its software integrations and its SkyTab POS range; since the acquisition of Global Blue in 2025 it also sells tax-free shopping and dynamic currency conversion in Europe and beyond.

Shift4 is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker FOUR. Its annual report calls it a leading independent provider of software and payment processing solutions in the United States.

How the platform works

Shift4's core is an omnichannel gateway that connects point-of-sale systems, e-commerce sites and mobile devices to card processing. The 10-K says the platform handles payments across in-person, online and mobile channels, and that the company sells through its own sales teams, independent software vendors and value-added resellers. The software-vendor channel matters: the filing says the gateway has hundreds of software integrations, so a restaurant, hotel or retailer can often keep its existing management software and add Shift4 behind it.

For card-present payments the company's developer guides cover UTG-controlled devices, a Commerce Engine interface, EMV tags, NFC contactless payments, card tokens and a point-to-point encrypted (P2PE) format. Our guide on how card payments work describes the authorisation and settlement flow these products sit within, and the tap to pay guide covers phone-based acceptance.

Products

Payments platform and gateway

Processing fees are charged as a percentage of volume, a fixed per-transaction fee, or both, according to the 10-K. The platform supports offline processing, split-tender and partial approvals, Level 2 purchasing card data, card-on-file transactions, surcharging and 3D Secure in its API guides. Our 3D Secure explainer covers that authentication step.

SkyTab and venue hardware

SkyTab is the company's POS family, with SkyTab POS, SkyTab Mobile and SkyTab Venue listed in the annual report. A separate Lighthouse product provides business intelligence reporting.

E-commerce and marketplace

Shift4Shop is an e-commerce platform, and Marketplace offers third-party app integrations. Payment links and hosted checkout are covered in the API documentation.

The Giving Block

The Giving Block is a cryptocurrency donation marketplace that the 10-K says serves about 2,400 charities.

Global Blue and tax-free shopping

The FY2025 report says the Global Blue acquisition closed in the third quarter of 2025, with a tagged date of 3 July 2025. Global Blue's TFS Services is a VAT refund platform with more than 40 acquirer and PSP partners, more than 250 POS partners and 13 scheme integrations (as of the filing). Shift4 also owns Finaro, formerly Credorax, acquired in 2023.

The changelog shows frequent updates: version 1.7.67 on 29 October 2026 added checkout examples, 1.7.65 on 19 October 2026 added cash disbursement support and 3D Secure request bodies for card verification, and 1.7.63 on 29 September 2026 changed dynamic currency conversion fields. The docs do not describe a webhook or sandbox section on the guides page we opened.

Payment methods, currencies and coverage

Shift4 One, launched in July 2026 with Global Blue, is a handheld terminal that combines card payments, dynamic currency conversion and tax-free shopping for small and medium businesses serving international visitors. It launched first in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Germany, with a stated aim of 15 European countries by the end of 2026. The device detects international cardholders, offers to charge in their home currency and calculates the tax refund at the point of sale. The release gives 14 July 2026 as the date, while the press release listing shows 2 July, so we cite July 2026 only.

On crypto, a 22 December 2025 release introduced stablecoin settlement, where opted-in merchants can receive settlement in USDC, USDT, EURC or DAI over networks including Ethereum, Solana, Stellar, Polygon, TON and Base. A May 2026 release says the existing Pay with Crypto product now supports Tether (USDT) through Lydian, with merchants receiving local currency. The release says Pay with Crypto is live with thousands of US merchants. See our guide on how stablecoin payments work.

Pricing model

Shift4 does not publish a standard rate card on the pages we opened. The annual report describes revenue as mostly processing fees, charged by percentage, per transaction or both, plus subscription revenue from POS software, business intelligence and device management. Merchant quotes are therefore individual; compare the fee schedule, equipment terms and contract length.

Company figures

Customers "Hundreds of thousands of businesses" 10-K for FY2025

The 10-Q excerpt we read does not state the net revenue or volume measures that the company emphasises, so we omit them.

Regulation in brief

The filings we opened describe Shift4 as a processor, gateway and software provider, and note the acquisition of Finaro, but the extracts we read do not list licences or registrations. Merchants should check Shift4's regulatory disclosures in the risk factors of its annual report and confirm which legal entity processes their payments in each country. Our guide on how to check a financial licence explains the steps.

Who it tends to suit

Shift4 commonly suits restaurants, venues and retailers that run industry software and want one provider for POS, gateway and processing, and international retailers interested in tax-free shopping. Those comparing large US processors can read our Shift4 vs Fiserv comparison, or the profiles of Fiserv, Global Payments and Square. Worth checking: equipment contract terms, early termination and which entity settles your funds. The acquiring hub lists related profiles.
