Global Payments is a payment technology and software company, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, that provides card acceptance, point-of-sale software and payment APIs to businesses from small shops to global enterprises. Following the completion of its Worldpay purchase on 12 January 2026, it describes itself as a pure-play commerce solutions provider.

The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: GPN) and says it operates in more than 175 countries. Its most visible product push is Genius, a point-of-sale platform introduced in May 2025 that combines several older POS products under one brand.

How the platform works

Global Payments operates on both sides of a card payment that a merchant sees: the acceptance layer (terminals, point-of-sale software, online checkout) and the processing and acquiring behind it. For the merchant, that means one provider can supply the till software, the payment device and the account that receives the funds. Our guide on how card payments work explains the flow: the merchant sends a payment request, the acquirer routes it to the card scheme and the issuing bank, and the result comes back to the till or checkout.

After the January 2026 deal the company says it goes to market through three channels: Enterprise, SMB, and Integrated and Platforms, the last aimed at software companies that embed payments in their own products. On the technical side, its developer pages describe encryption, tokenisation and 3-D Secure, and say the company is a certified Level 1 PCI DSS service provider. See our explainers on 3-D Secure and network tokenisation.

For in-person payments the developer pages describe a pre-built, pre-certified EMV application with an API layer that handles the chip interaction. The company says this reduces PCI DSS scope for the merchant and removes PA-DSS scope for POS software vendors.

Products

Genius point of sale

Announced on 16 May 2025, Genius unifies the company's earlier POS products into one configurable system. It comes in three versions:

Version Launch and availability (company releases)
Genius for Restaurants Launched 17 May 2025 in the US and Canada. Waitlist and reservations, tableside payments, real-time reporting, marketing and loyalty tools
Genius for Retail US in June 2025, then Canada, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. Order management, inventory, checkout, loyalty and invoicing
Genius for Enterprise Announced 10 September 2025 for the US. Quick-service and fast-casual restaurants, sports venues and foodservice operators

The enterprise release lists a point of sale that syncs data in real time and works offline, an integrated payment stack with EMV support, kitchen order routing, back-office reporting, drive-thru equipment including a vision system that starts orders, digital menu boards and kiosks. At that date the company reported about 51,000 restaurants and roughly 160 stadiums and venues using its enterprise technology.

Worldpay and merchant acquiring

The 12 January 2026 announcement says Genius will be offered to Worldpay's small-business clients, while Worldpay's enterprise and ecommerce products will be offered to existing Global Payments customers. Our Worldpay profile covers that business on its own terms, and the Worldpay vs Adyen comparison sets it beside another large processor.

Issuer Solutions

The issuer processing business was sold to Fidelity National Information Services as part of the same transaction, so card issuing is no longer part of the continuing group. The 18 February 2026 results release reports it as discontinued operations.

Developer experience and integrations

The developer pages list transaction, subscription, tokenisation, payout and pre-authorisation APIs, with SDKs and libraries and a sandbox. The company groups integration into three styles: a no-code plugin, low-code SDK or library use, and high-code direct API integration. Authentication is by API keys. Sample code, documentation, a developer community and real-time reporting are listed. The pages do not name programming languages.

Three developer portals are listed, each for a different audience: Heartland for US businesses selling to US customers, Global Payments for US businesses selling internationally, and a portal for integrated software providers. The company says setup can take as little as 10 minutes. Plugins are mentioned for leading shopping carts and online ordering tools.

Payment methods, currencies and coverage

The developer page lists:

Type Methods
Cards Debit and credit cards
Bank transfer ACH
Wallets Apple Pay, Google Pay
Alternative methods PayPal, Klarna, Alipay, WeChat Pay, GrabPay

Coverage is stated as more than 175 countries (18 February 2026). A list of supported currencies is not published on the pages we reviewed. For the logic behind these methods see alternative payment methods explained.

Pricing model

Global Payments does not publish a rate card on the pages we opened, and the developer pages explicitly give no pricing. Terms for merchants are agreed through the relevant sales channel or integrated software partner. Treat any specific rate quoted by third parties as unverified.

Financial context

Figures are from the 18 February 2026 results release, for the year ended 31 December 2025.

Measure Full year 2025
GAAP revenue USD 7.71 billion
Adjusted net revenue USD 9.32 billion
Merchant Solutions adjusted revenue USD 7.23 billion

For 2026 the company guided to adjusted net revenue growth of about 5 per cent in constant currency, excluding dispositions, on a combined basis that includes Worldpay. The 12 January release also says the company plans to invest more than USD 1 billion a year in innovation.

Regulation in brief

The pages we opened do not list the group's licences or registrations by entity. As a US-listed company it publishes its filings through its investor relations site, and the regulated entity that serves a merchant will be named in that merchant's contract. Our guide to checking a financial licence explains how to verify an entity.

Who it tends to suit

Global Payments is commonly used by restaurants, retailers and venues that want point-of-sale software and payments from one supplier, and by software companies that embed payments through its integrated channel. Large enterprises with international ecommerce may also compare Adyen, and developer-led online businesses often look at Stripe or Shift4. Our acquiring hub lists related profiles.
