Nexi is a European payments group, headquartered in Milan, that provides card acceptance to merchants, card issuing and processing to banks, and digital banking infrastructure. Its online gateway, XPay, lets a merchant take payments through a hosted page, embedded iframes, a server-to-server API or ready-made shop plugins.

The group is publicly listed on Euronext Milan and reported first-quarter 2026 net revenues of EUR 821.4 million. It describes itself as active in more than 25 countries, a footprint built when Nexi, Nets and Sia combined on 1 January 2022. For readers comparing European acquirers, the closest peer profile is Worldline, and a direct view is in our Worldline vs Nexi comparison.

How the platform works

Nexi sells to three kinds of customer. Merchants buy acceptance: in-store terminals, online checkout and remote payments. Banks buy services that sit behind their own brand, such as acquiring, card issuing, ATM and self-banking services, open banking and compliance tools. Central institutions, public bodies and consumers form the remaining groups, the last through payment cards, mobile payments and a digital receipt service called Nexi Smart Receipt.

In plain terms, Nexi is both a processor and a platform provider. On the merchant side it operates the gateway and acquiring flow that moves a card payment from the checkout to the schemes. On the bank side it runs processing that lets banks issue and manage cards without building their own stack. The pages we opened do not describe the internal architecture in more detail, so this article does not speculate about it.

At the checkout, authentication uses 3-D Secure under the names Visa Secure and Mastercard Identity Check. Our 3-D Secure guide explains how that step works. XPay also supports tokenisation for repeat payments, covered by the developer documentation under OneClick, recurring, omnichannel and multicurrency headings. For background on stored credentials, see network tokenisation explained.

Products

Merchant Solutions

This is the largest segment. For the quarter ended 31 March 2026 the company reported Merchant Solutions revenue of EUR 453.8 million, about 55 per cent of group revenue, with 4,844 million transactions and EUR 201.5 billion of processed value. These are company figures from its first-quarter 2026 release dated 7 May 2026.

Issuing Solutions

Issuing is the processing of cards on behalf of banks and corporates. For the same quarter Nexi reported revenue of EUR 278.3 million, 5,359 million transactions and EUR 228.1 billion processed value. The group page mentions Nexi Ready, a managed card offering for issuers. The page does not give more technical detail on it.

Digital Banking Solutions

The smallest segment, at EUR 89.3 million in the same quarter. The 7 May 2026 release lists open banking, Verification-of-Payee services, SEPA Clearing, PagoPA bill payments in Italy, the Nexi Bancomat processing hub and Zippay, an account-to-account service for Irish banks, among its product highlights. Our open banking explainer covers the account-to-account model.

Developer experience and integrations

The XPay Global developer portal lists six ways to integrate, and the choice sets how much card data a merchant touches:

Option What it does
XPay Checkout (Hosted Payment Page) Customer is redirected to a Nexi page to pay and authenticate, then returns to the shop. Handles single purchases and subscriptions
XPay Build Payment fields are embedded in the merchant page as iframes served by Nexi, so the merchant does not handle card data directly
Server to Server Merchant collects card data and calls the API; the documentation states this requires PCI DSS SAQ D
In-App SDK Mobile SDKs for Android and iOS, plus Java and PHP SDKs
Pay-by-Link Payment links sent by email, SMS or messaging apps, for sellers without a webshop
E-commerce plugins WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento 2, OpenCart, Salesforce, BigCommerce, Shopware and VirtueMart

A test environment provides test data and cards. The documentation says a merchant first obtains XPay test credentials, and that going live needs live credentials plus confirmation from the merchant's Nexi partner or acquirer. That last step reflects the standard split between gateway and acquirer described in our guide on gateways, PSPs and acquirers.

Payment methods, currencies and coverage

The XPay documentation lists these methods:

Type Methods
Cards Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, V Pay, American Express, JCB
Wallets Google Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal, PayPal Pay in 3
Account to account Bancomat Pay, MyBank, Giropay, iDEAL, Bancontact

The group page states operations in more than 25 countries and more than 60 offices in Europe. A full list of countries and currencies is not published on the pages we reviewed. See also our primer on alternative payment methods.

Pricing model

Nexi does not publish merchant price lists on the pages we opened. The developer documentation says production access is confirmed by a Nexi partner or acquirer, so merchants should ask that party for a fee schedule. Treat any specific rate seen elsewhere as unverified until confirmed with Nexi directly.

Recent launches

  • 4 March 2026: Nexi launched a Model Context Protocol (MCP) offering that lets developers and partners connect AI agents to its payment services using natural-language instructions. The release says each agent action is governed by permissions and logged.
  • Agent-initiated payments: The same release says Nexi is working with Google on the AP2 protocol, with planned support for the Universal Commerce Protocol, and with Visa and Mastercard. Nexi joined the Agentic Commerce Alliance in January 2026 and says it has pilot merchants in the Nordics and Italy, while noting the area is at an early stage in Europe.
  • 25 February 2025: Nexi and Klarna announced a global partnership. Klarna is enabled by default in Nexi's checkout, building on a Nordic pilot. This is older than 18 months and included for context.
  • 7 May 2026: The first-quarter release confirmed 2026 guidance of net revenue growth broadly in line with 2025.

Regulation in brief

The pages we opened do not list Nexi's authorisations by entity or country. Regulated payment and e-money activity in Europe is normally carried out through licensed subsidiaries, so readers should check the legal entity named in their own contract. Our guide to checking a financial licence and the payment institution licence explainer show how.

Who it tends to suit

Nexi is commonly used by European merchants, with its releases pointing to Italy, the Nordics and Poland, who want acquiring and a gateway from one group. Banks that prefer to outsource issuing or acquiring processing are the other core audience. Merchants who want a single global platform outside Europe may also look at Adyen or Shift4. Our acquiring hub lists related profiles.
