Mollie review: products, technology and pricing (2026)

Mollie is an Amsterdam-based payment service provider that gives small and mid-sized European businesses one API for cards, local methods such as iDEAL and Bancontact, in-person payments and recurring billing, at published per-transaction prices. Since September 2026 it also owns GoCardless, whose bank connections now power Mollie's Pay by Bank.

Mollie is a Dutch payment service provider that lets small and mid-sized businesses across Europe take cards, local payment methods, in-person and recurring payments through a single API or ready-made shop plugins, with prices published per transaction. Its technical pitch is a short path from sign-up to live payments: a hosted checkout or embeddable card form, plugins for the main e-commerce platforms and, since October 2026, an open MCP server for AI assistants.

In September 2026 Mollie completed its takeover of GoCardless, the bank payments firm, and the two now operate as one group while GoCardless keeps its own brand.

How the platform works

Mollie acts as the merchant's payment service provider: it accepts payments across cards and local methods under one contract and pays the settled funds out to the merchant, with payout terms set on its pricing page. Our explainer on gateways, PSPs and acquirers sets out how that differs from a pure gateway.

A typical online payment follows a simple flow in the Payments API. The merchant's server creates a payment with an amount, description and return URL. Mollie returns a checkout link; the shopper pays on Mollie's hosted page, or in a card form the merchant embeds using Mollie Components. Mollie then calls the merchant's webhook when the status changes, and the merchant fetches the payment to confirm it. Recurring billing adds customers, mandates and subscriptions on top, so a first payment can authorise later charges.

The older Orders API, which added order lines and shipment-based capture, is no longer recommended; Mollie's docs point new integrations to the Payments API and publish a migration guide.

For platforms and marketplaces, Mollie Connect uses OAuth to onboard merchants, act on their behalf and route or split funds.

Risk tooling, as Mollie describes it, includes 3D Secure for online card payments, automated real-time transaction monitoring that can block suspicious payments, mandatory multi-factor sign-in through the Mollie app and encryption of data in transit and at rest. Customer funds are held in a separate safeguarding account through a foundation, Stichting Mollie Payments.

Products

Online checkout

Merchants choose between the hosted checkout, embedded Components and a beta Sessions API for starting a checkout. The pricing page lists Payment Links, Invoicing, Checkout and Recurring as included at no extra cost.

In-person payments

Mollie sells three card terminals and supports Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android phones without extra hardware. A Terminals API connects point of sale systems. Our guide to Tap to Pay and SoftPOS covers how phone-based acceptance works.

Pay by Bank

Mollie relaunched Pay by Bank in the Netherlands on 2 October 2026, now built on GoCardless's open banking connections, which Mollie says reach more than 2,500 banks. Because Mollie owns the bank connection, it says checkout takes three steps, and the same rail can capture the payer's IBAN for later Direct Debits. A wider European rollout is planned through 2027. Our open banking payments guide explains the underlying technology.

Business Accounts and Capital

Mollie Business Accounts, launched in 2025, are the company's first business banking product, with SEPA and other outgoing transfers priced on its pricing page. Mollie Capital offers financing; Mollie said in May 2026 it had provided more than €250m to European businesses.

Developer experience and integrations

Item What Mollie publishes
Core API Payments API (REST), with webhooks and next-gen webhooks
Client libraries Including JavaScript, PHP, .NET and Python
Plugins WooCommerce, Shopify, Magento 2, PrestaShop, Shopware and others
Platforms Mollie Connect (OAuth onboarding, routing and split payments)
Testing Separate test API key; test data isolated from live data; EUR only in test mode
Test tools Test checkout screen, test cards, "magic" amounts that force specific card failure reasons, Postman collection
AI tooling Open MCP server and AI plugins for Claude and ChatGPT (October 2026)

Test mode is worth a note. Mollie gives fixed amounts that trigger particular decline reasons, so a developer can check that an "invalid card number" or "refused by issuer" response is handled properly before going live. Recurring and paid test payments carry a link that sets their final state, including refunds and chargebacks.

The October 2026 MCP server lets businesses run more than 60 operations, such as creating payment links, pausing subscriptions or drafting credit notes, from an AI assistant. Mollie says the assistant cannot move money by itself: any transfer needs the user's approval and stays within the account's existing roles and limits.

Payment methods, currencies and coverage

Mollie said on 18 June 2026 that it is fully operational in every EEA country, and it also serves the UK through Mollie UK Ltd. Beyond Visa, Mastercard and American Express, its pricing page lists local and alternative methods including iDEAL | Wero, Bancontact, Cartes Bancaires, SEPA Direct Debit, SEPA bank transfer, PayPal, Klarna, Apple Pay, Google Pay, BLIK, Bizum, Swish, Billie, Riverty, Alma, in3 and paysafecard. Our guide to alternative payment methods explains the main types.

Pricing model

Mollie publishes standard pay-as-you-go rates with no monthly fee for online payments. Card rates depend on brand, whether the card is consumer or commercial, where it was issued and where the payment takes place. These are the euro rates shown on 3 November 2026:

Method (online, EUR) Published fee
Visa and Mastercard, EEA consumer cards 1.80% + €0.25
Visa and Mastercard, EEA commercial cards 2.90% + €0.25
Visa and Mastercard, non-EEA cards 3.25% + €0.25
American Express 2.90% + €0.25
Cartes Bancaires (consumer) 1.20% + €0.25
iDEAL | Wero €0.32 (Netherlands), €0.39 (Belgium), 0.90% + €0.25 (other)
Bancontact 1.40% + €0.25

Pay by Bank 0.45% + €0.25
PayPal PayPal's own fees + €0.10
Klarna 2.99% to 4.99% + €0.35 to €0.45, by country

UK rates on the same page are 1.20% + £0.20 for consumer Visa and Mastercard, 2.90% + £0.20 for commercial cards and 2.50% + £0.20 for American Express.

In-person (EUR) Pay as you go (€0 a month, one terminal) Pro (€20 a month per terminal)
Domestic consumer cards 1.20% 0.85% + €0.10
Other consumer cards 1.80% 1.50% + €0.10
American Express 2.10% 1.80% + €0.10
Commercial cards 2.90% 2.50% + €0.10

Terminals cost €95 (Tap), €350 (mobile) or €350 (fixed). Business Accounts are €9 a month after 12 free months. Businesses processing more than €100,000 a month can ask for volume pricing, which Mollie says can include IC++. The pricing page does not list refund, chargeback or Capital fees. Our guide to how card payments work explains the difference between blended and IC++ pricing.

Regulation in brief

According to its impressum, Mollie B.V. is an electronic money institution supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank, the Dutch central bank. In the UK, Mollie UK Ltd is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority as a payment institution. Mollie says customer funds are safeguarded in a separate account held through Stichting Mollie Payments, which also falls under DNB supervision.

Who it tends to suit

Mollie is commonly used by small and mid-sized online shops, subscription businesses and platforms in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and the wider EEA, especially those that sell through WooCommerce, Shopify or similar plugins. Published rates and broad local method coverage may suit merchants who want predictable costs without negotiating. Larger businesses with complex routing or global acquiring needs may also look at Adyen or Stripe; see Mollie vs Stripe, our Stripe alternatives and the gateways category.
