Mollie vs Stripe for European merchants (2026)

Mollie is an Amsterdam-based payments company focused on European businesses, with per-method pricing, a REST API and, since September 2026, GoCardless's bank payment network. Stripe is a global payments and finance platform with a wider product catalogue, blended card pricing and custom IC+ for larger merchants.

Mollie and Stripe both let European merchants accept cards and local payment methods through one API, but Mollie concentrates on Europe, while Stripe is a global platform with a much wider catalogue of finance tools. Both publish standard per-transaction prices with no monthly fee for online payments; Mollie prices each payment method separately, and Stripe adds custom IC+ pricing for larger merchants.

Technology and architecture

Mollie

Mollie's API is a REST interface built around the Payments API. Each payment object can be extended with refunds, captures, chargebacks and payment links, and recurring billing works through a Customers API that holds mandates and subscriptions. Business operations sit in separate Balances, Settlements, Invoices and Payouts endpoints, so reconciliation data comes from the same API. Webhooks tell the merchant's server when a payment status changes.

Merchants can send customers to Mollie's hosted checkout or embed card fields on their own page with Mollie Components, loaded through Mollie.js. Platforms and marketplaces use Mollie Connect, which is largely OAuth-based: the platform gets permission to onboard merchants and process payments for them.

Test mode runs on the same API with a separate test key. Test data is fully separated from live data, a test checkout screen lets developers pick an outcome, and specific "magic" amounts force particular card failure reasons. Mollie also runs an MCP server that lets AI assistants act on a merchant's account within that user's existing role; it can create payments, payment links and invoices, but per its documentation does not issue refunds.

Stripe

Stripe's API is also REST-based, at a single base URL, with resource-oriented endpoints. Its older v1 namespace takes form-encoded requests and returns JSON; the newer v2 namespace uses JSON both ways, emits lightweight "thin" events and keeps idempotency keys valid for 30 days rather than 24 hours. Stripe lists official server libraries for Ruby, Python, PHP, Java, Node.js, Go and .NET, and each account is pinned to an API version.

On the front end, the Payment Element is an embeddable UI component that Stripe says supports more than 100 payment methods. With dynamic payment methods, the merchant switches methods on or off in the Dashboard and Stripe orders them by relevance to the buyer's location, currency and basket size, so a German shopper paying in euros sees methods common in Germany first. Stripe recommends pairing it with the Checkout Sessions API, which handles tax, discounts, shipping and subscriptions. Testing runs in sandboxes that never touch banking networks.

Products

Mollie

  • Payments: online checkout, payment links and recurring payments.
  • In person: Mollie Terminal, Mollie Tap and Tap to Pay on iPhone in selected countries; see our tap to pay explainer.
  • Money management: business accounts (€9 a month, free for the first 12 months), outbound payments and Mollie Capital, which Mollie said had funded more than €250m for European businesses (May 2026).
  • Bank payments: after completing its GoCardless acquisition on 1 September 2026, Mollie said it would offer Direct Debit and pay by bank in 38 countries alongside its card and local methods, rolled out in phases.

Stripe

Stripe's newsroom lists products across payments (Checkout, Elements, Payment Links, Terminal, Link), revenue (Billing, Invoicing, Tax, Revenue Recognition), money management (Treasury, Global Payouts, Capital) and embedded finance (Connect, Issuing), plus Radar for fraud and Atlas for company formation. Its February 2026 annual letter added agentic commerce tools, including the Agentic Commerce Protocol built with OpenAI and Shared Payment Tokens that let AI agents start payments without seeing card details.

All prices from mollie.com/pricing and Stripe's Netherlands pricing and local payment methods pages, as displayed on 3 November 2026. Mollie charges only for successful transactions and lists its card fee as one blended rate. Stripe adds a 2% currency conversion fee on several methods when conversion applies. Your real cost depends on card mix and method mix, so model it on your own transaction data.

Payment methods and coverage

By our count, Mollie's pricing page lists more than 30 payment methods, many of them regional: iDEAL and Wero, Bancontact, Cartes Bancaires, EPS, Przelewy24, BLIK, Swish, TWINT, Vipps and MobilePay, MB Way, Multibanco, Bizum, Satispay, PostePay and BANCOMAT Pay, plus BNPL from Klarna, Riverty, Billink, in3, Billie and Alma. Stripe's Netherlands page lists 31 local methods, and its Payment Element supports more than 100 methods globally. Our alternative payment methods guide explains the main types.

Geographically, Mollie said in May 2026 that it entered 12 new markets in 2025 and aimed for a local presence in every European country by June 2026. Stripe's newsroom states it is available to businesses in more than 50 countries.

Regulation in brief

Mollie's impressum states that Mollie B.V. is licensed by De Nederlandsche Bank as an electronic money institution and that Mollie UK Ltd is registered with the FCA as a payment institution; its help centre says business account funds are held in a separate safeguarding account. Stripe's STEL page states that Stripe Technology Europe, Limited is authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland as an electronic money institution, covering acquiring, e-money issuance, money remittance, and payment initiation and account information services.

Which is the better fit for what

  • Dutch or Belgian webshop relying on iDEAL, Wero and Bancontact: both cover these methods; compare the per-method fees above against your sales mix.
  • Merchant selling across many European countries with local methods: Mollie's catalogue is concentrated on European methods; Stripe covers most of the same plus global ones.
  • SaaS business needing subscriptions, tax and revenue reporting from one vendor: Stripe's Billing, Tax and Revenue Recognition are designed for this.
  • Business collecting large volumes by direct debit: Mollie now owns GoCardless; Stripe offers SEPA Direct Debit. Check mandate tools and failed-payment fees.
  • Platform or marketplace onboarding sellers: compare Mollie Connect's OAuth model with Stripe Connect.
  • Business operating outside Europe as well: Stripe's 50+ country footprint may suit; Mollie focuses on Europe.
