PayU is a payments brand whose biggest operation is now PayU India, a payment gateway and aggregator owned by the Dutch-listed internet group Prosus and serving more than 450,000 Indian merchants. In Poland and Central Europe the brand is run by PayU S.A., a Poznań company authorised by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) as a national payment institution since 2012.

The PayU name has covered very different businesses over the past three years. Prosus sold PayU's Latin American and African operations to Rapyd in March 2025, and its FY26 results state that the sale of the European operations closed in November 2025. This profile separates the entities so readers can see which company they would actually contract with.

Products and services

PayU India payment gateway

PayU India sells a hosted and API payment gateway for online businesses, alongside payouts, invoices, payment buttons, payment links, a simple store builder, an Excel plugin, QR codes and enterprise integrations. Its about page lists more than 100 payment methods, while the footer of its international payments page cites 150+. The two figures sit on different pages and neither carries a date, so treat them as approximate.

Prosus reports that PayU India processed US$90bn of total payment volume in the year to 31 March 2026, with transactions up 49% on the prior year. Prosus also states that PayU helps banks process one in every two UPI transactions, a claim we could not check against an independent source.

International acceptance

The cross-border product lets Indian merchants take Visa, Mastercard, American Express and PayPal from customers abroad. PayU says it supports 135+ currencies and settles in rupees on a T+2 business day cycle, converting at the transaction-date rate (payu.in, accessed 3 November 2026). Prosus says PayU now holds the RBI's cross-border payment aggregator authorisation as well as the online and offline ones.

Credit

PayU India runs a lending arm that began with LazyPay in 2017 and an NBFC licence in 2018. In FY26 (year to 31 March 2026) Prosus reported credit revenue of US$204m and a net loss rate of 4%, down from 5%.

PayU in Poland and Central Europe

PayU S.A. offers online payments for e-commerce, a marketplace product, a payment gateway, Click to Pay, multi-currency acceptance and settlement, and business loans through a partnership with YouLend. Payment methods named on its site include cards, pay-by-link bank transfers, BLIK, PayU Raty instalments, BNPL, recurring payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The company says it serves more than 300,000 merchants and employs 450+ people (page last modified 14 January 2026). The Polish site quotes both "300+" and "400+" payment methods on the same page, so we have not used either figure.

Fees and pricing

PayU India publishes a standard rate card. All figures below come from payu.in/pricing, accessed 3 November 2026.

Method (India, Standard plan) Fee per transaction
Domestic Visa and Mastercard 2%
Net banking, wallets, BNPL 2%
American Express, Diners 3%
Card EMI 3%
International transactions 3%
UPI Varies by business type and volume (not published)
Setup fee, annual maintenance fee Zero

GST is charged on top, and the page carries a "T&C apply" note without linking the terms. An Enterprise plan is priced on request.

PayU S.A. in Poland does not publish a full card rate card. Its cost table in force from 8 May 2026 covers only selected items:

Item (Poland) Fee
BLIK scheme fee, monthly BLIK volume up to PLN 25m 0.19%
BLIK scheme fee, above PLN 100m 0.10%
Transaction handling fee PLN 0.20 / EUR 0.05 / CZK 1.00 per transaction
Klarna dispute fee (standard) PLN 90 per dispute

Intermediate BLIK tiers sit between those two rates. Card, transfer and instalment commissions are agreed per merchant.

Prosus also owns iyzico, a Turkish payments company. It reports iyzico as a separate business in its FY26 results, not under the PayU brand. For context on payment methods such as BLIK and UPI, see our explainer on alternative payment methods.

Ownership changes 2023 to 2025

Date Event Source
1 August 2023 Rapyd agrees to buy PayU's Global Payment Organisation (GPO) for US$610m, excluding India, Turkey and Southeast Asia Rapyd press release

The PayU GPO Europe business contributed eight months of results to Prosus in FY26: revenue of US$167m. Merchants in Poland and Central Europe may want to confirm the current shareholder of PayU S.A. directly with the company, as we could not find it on the pages listed below.

Regulation in brief

PayU India's lending business is separate: its own history page says it acquired a non-bank finance company (NBFC) licence in 2018 for credit, but it does not name the entity on that page. PayU does not appear on the RBI page that tracks pending, returned and refused applications under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act (list dated 1 November 2026). To check any of these entries yourself, search the KNF register of payment services and the RBI's lists of authorised payment system operators; our guide on how to check a financial licence explains the steps.

Who it tends to suit

PayU India is commonly used by Indian e-commerce merchants, travel businesses and airlines that need UPI, net banking, wallets and card EMI in one integration, and by merchants selling abroad who want rupee settlement. Its published 2% flat rate may suit smaller merchants who want predictable pricing without negotiation.

PayU S.A. is mainly relevant to merchants selling to Polish consumers, where BLIK and pay-by-link transfers carry much of the online volume, and to those adding Czech, Hungarian or Romanian checkouts. Merchants comparing it with pan-European processors may also look at Adyen, Stripe or Mollie. For the differences between gateways, PSPs and acquirers, see our explainer.

What to check before signing up

  • Which PayU entity is named in your contract: PayU Payments Private Limited, PayU S.A., or another company.
  • For India: the UPI rate for your business type, which is not published, and the settlement cycle in your agreement.
  • For India: whether international card and Amex rates of 3% apply to your volumes, and how GST is shown on invoices.
  • For Poland: the card and transfer commission in your individual offer, since the public cost table covers only BLIK, handling and Klarna dispute fees.
  • For Poland: the current owner of PayU S.A. after the November 2025 sale, and whether any contract changes followed.
  • Any rolling reserve or chargeback terms, which are set in the merchant agreement.
