Plaid provides APIs that let financial apps connect to their users' bank accounts, verify those accounts, read balances and transactions, and move money by bank transfer, mainly in the US, with a payment initiation product covering 18 European markets. Its distinctive asset is the Plaid Network: permissioned data from the connections it handles trains the fraud, ACH risk and credit models that Plaid sells alongside basic connectivity.

How the platform works

Most Plaid integrations start with Link, the front-end module where a user picks their bank and grants access. The flow, as documented:

  1. The app's backend calls /link/token/create to get a short-lived link_token (four hours for a new connection, 30 minutes for update mode).
  2. The app opens Link with that token. The user selects their institution and logs in or authorises through the bank's OAuth screen.
  3. Link returns a public_token, which the backend exchanges at /item/public_token/exchange for a long-lived access_token.
  4. The access token represents an Item (one user's login at one institution), and the app calls product endpoints such as Auth, Balance or Transactions against it.

Webhooks report events such as an Item being added or a session finishing. Hosted Link lets a business send the flow by SMS or email instead of embedding it.

On top of the connection, Plaid runs payment and risk services. Auth returns account and routing numbers so a business can pay by ACH through its own processor or one of Plaid's processor partners. Transfer is Plaid's own money movement product, which supports ACH, RTP, FedNow and request for payment. Before a transfer, Balance or Signal can check whether the payment is likely to be returned.

The risk layer is where the network matters. Signal 4 (October 2026) adds a sequential model that reads an account's transactions in order, plus cash flow features and AI that spots past returns in raw transaction text. Protect scores fraud with Trust Index models, now fed by a transformer-based fraud foundation model pretrained on sequence data before fine-tuning on fraud labels. Plaid says the foundation model showed a 40% improvement in fraud detection in internal tests (6 October 2026). Customers can feed decisions and returns back through the API to improve the models.

In Europe the model differs. Plaid's Payments product initiates bank transfers directly from the user's account over Faster Payments, SEPA Instant, SEPA Credit Transfer and local rails, switchable with one request parameter. For the general mechanics, see our open banking payments explainer.

Products

Data and connectivity

Transactions, Investments, Liabilities, Statements and Enrich give apps account history and categorised spending. Plaid launched model-based transaction categorisation in 2025 and a transaction foundation model at its May 2026 Effects event, which it says improved categorisation accuracy by 13%.

Account verification and payments (US)

Auth verifies account details. Database Auth, launched in June 2026, checks manually entered account and routing numbers through a backend-only API. Transfer handles money movement, and Transfer for Platforms (beta in 2025) lets vertical software companies embed bill pay. Signal scores ACH return risk. Plaid Guaranteed Payments, announced in May 2026 with a waitlist, screens each transaction and guarantees settlement on approved payments.

Identity and fraud

Identity matches account holder data with bank records. Identity Verification (IDV) handles KYC with document, selfie and liveness checks. Protect is the fraud platform built on Trust Index, now in its third version (Ti3, May 2026). Monitor scans each new user and can rescan users monthly.

Credit (Plaid Check)

Plaid Check is the product family for credit, delivered through Plaid's consumer reporting agency. LendScore 2 (October 2026) is a family of cash flow credit scores with a 1,000 to 2,000 range, including versions for auto, short-term and home lending. Instant Link lets a returning borrower share data with a lender using basic identifiers, without reconnecting a bank account. Plaid Income and the Cash Advance Index (waitlist, May 2026) target income verification and earned wage access.

Onboarding (Layer)

Layer pre-fills sign-up details for users already in the Plaid Network; Extended Autofill was added in 2025 for most US consumers.

Payments in Europe

One-time payment initiation, UK-only variable recurring payments, and an optional Virtual Accounts add-on for refunds, payouts and settlement status. Refunds are only available through Virtual Accounts.

Developer experience and integrations

Resource What Plaid publishes
Sandbox Free; Sandbox Studio (May 2026) generates test users and scenarios in the Dashboard
Client libraries Official and community libraries for the API and Link, listed on a separate Libraries page
CLI Plaid CLI with JSON output
MCP servers A Dashboard MCP server for Link analytics and Item health, and a local MCP server for test users, webhooks and docs search
Postman Collection on GitHub
Sample apps Quickstart, Tiny Quickstart and product samples

Plaid says it plans an MCP server for banks and other data partners later in 2026. It also offers a Data Partner Dashboard so community banks and credit unions can manage their connections. Plaid reported 6,121 institution integration repairs in 2025 and a 50% drop in outage-related downtime across its top 50 data providers (9 January 2026).

Regulation in brief

Plaid states on its support site that it is authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority under the Payment Services Regulations 2017 to provide payment services. In the US, Plaid says it delivers credit products such as LendScore and Instant Link through its consumer reporting agency (October 2026). Our guide on how to check a financial licence explains how to look up an FCA authorisation, and our PSD3 and PSR page covers proposed EU open banking rules.

Who it tends to suit

  • US fintechs, neobanks and brokerages that need to link external bank accounts for funding, verification or account aggregation.
  • Lenders that want cash flow data and scores alongside traditional credit files.
  • Businesses running ACH pay-ins that want return-risk scoring before releasing funds.
  • Developers starting small, given the free sandbox and Trial plan.

For UK and European pay by bank, merchants may also look at TrueLayer, Trustly or GoCardless. Our Plaid vs TrueLayer comparison and open banking hub cover the differences.
