Payrails is a payment platform for enterprise merchants that connects many payment providers, payment methods, fraud tools and finance systems behind one set of APIs. Founded in Berlin in 2021, it covers orchestration, tokenisation, reconciliation, chargebacks and payouts, and in October 2026 added a Merchant of Record service for selling digital products abroad.

Its distinguishing design claim is modularity: each module can be adopted alone, with a shared data layer underneath. See our guide to payment orchestration for the wider concept.

How the platform works

Payrails describes itself in its documentation as a payment operating system with five core building blocks: payment orchestration through a single API, workflows (configurable sequences and rules), checkout, dynamic routing and a PCI-compliant vault. Merchants can integrate with Payrails SDKs or build a server-to-server connection. The setup path in the docs is to configure environments, choose modules, integrate the APIs, set merchant options and test on a staging environment, using a portal that offers simulated payment requests, test instruments and API logs.

The platform page groups the product into Payments (orchestration, token vault, network tokenisation, 3DS, payment links) and Finance and Data (unified analytics, chargebacks, reconciliation, payouts and fee monitoring). Data and workflows are normalised across providers so that adding a new provider or method does not mean rebuilding existing flows. The company also says AI supports routing, retry logic, reconciliation matching, chargeback defence and cost analysis, and offers an assistant called Ask Payrails. How these AI functions are measured is not described.

Routing

The routing documentation describes rules that can use card type, amount, currency and the origin and destination countries to pick a provider, and dynamic routing that can direct payments to different PSPs, fraud providers or other third-party services. The routing page itself does not cover fallback or retries; the billing guide, however, recommends starting with market-based routing and enabling failover and smart retries, and notes that one billing attempt can cascade across several providers. Background is in our explainer on routing, cascading and retries.

Products

The docs list no-code workflow building, customisable checkout SDKs (an Android styling guide is referenced), hosted payment links, network tokenisation, in-person payments and alternative payment methods. No payment methods are named individually in the documentation pages reviewed.

Token vault

The vault is described as PCI-certified and provider-agnostic: stored credentials can be sent to any third party, so a merchant is not tied to one PSP's tokens. Payrails states that it is PCI DSS Level 1 compliant. See our guide on payment vaults and tokenisation.

Billing support

Payrails does not replace a subscription engine. Its billing guide says the merchant's billing system, for example Stripe, Chargebee, Recurly or Lago, manages invoices and dunning, while Payrails collects the first payment, stores the instrument, charges renewals off-session with the right customer-initiated and merchant-initiated flags, and applies strong customer authentication where needed.

Finance and data

Unified analytics combine Payrails and non-Payrails data, with monitoring and alerts, chargeback management and reconciliation events that can be mapped to ERP and finance systems.

Merchant of Record

Launched on 7 October 2026, the Merchant of Record (MoR) service makes Payrails the legal seller in selected markets. According to the launch post, it handles sales tax, VAT and GST, invoicing, compliance, fraud prevention and disputes. A merchant can use MoR in some markets and its own merchant IDs in others on one platform, and move a market to its own setup without re-integration, with saved cards in the Token Vault moving too. It targets AI, SaaS, mobile app and digital goods businesses, covers digital products and services only, and onboarding involves business verification and product catalogue approval.

Developer experience and integrations

Payrails publishes a documentation site with an API reference, use-case guides, testing tools and a blog. Its integrations cover more than 100 PSPs, acquirers, fraud tools, BNPL providers, local payment methods and ERPs (platform page, 3 Nov 2026). Providers named on the platform page include Stripe, Checkout.com, PayPal, Adyen, Worldpay, Payzone and HiPay, with Forter as a fraud example; profiles of Adyen and Checkout.com are on this site. Customers named include Puma, Vinted, HelloFresh, DeepL, Preply and inDrive. The company says most teams go live within weeks but gives no specific timeline.

Payment methods, currencies and coverage

Payrails does not publish a payment method count or country list in the pages reviewed. In a 13 November 2025 post about its Dublin office, it said the platform operates across 200+ countries, and in its Series A release it said it expanded into 30 new markets across Europe and MENA during 2024. The Series A text also states 100+ integrations. Customer-reported results on the homepage include a 6% authorisation rate increase at Teknasyon, 11% at inDrive and a 30% payment cost reduction at Preply; these are customer-attributed claims with no stated period.

Pricing model

Payrails does not publish pricing. The Merchant of Record page says pricing is not disclosed and points to a demo request.

Regulation in brief

The Payrails imprint identifies the operator as Payrails GmbH, registered in Berlin, and makes no financial licence statement. The company states PCI DSS Level 1 compliance on its platform page. For the Merchant of Record service it says Payrails becomes the legal seller in the markets where it is used, but the pages reviewed do not set out licences or supervisory status. Readers can see our guide to checking licences and the Payrails imprint.

Who it tends to suit

Payrails is commonly used by larger consumer brands, marketplaces and subscription businesses that want orchestration plus reconciliation and finance tooling in one place, and by software and AI companies exploring a Merchant of Record route.
