MoonPay is a crypto payments company that lets individuals buy, sell and swap crypto, and lets wallets, apps and exchanges embed its checkout so their own users can do the same. It describes itself as a financial technology company building payment infrastructure for crypto, and acts as merchant of record on widget purchases.

Crypto-assets are volatile and can lose value; this page describes products and does not recommend buying any asset. For background on how on-ramps fit together, see our guide to crypto on-ramps.

How the platform works

For partners, the simplest route is a hosted widget. MoonPay's developer pages say the widget handles identity checks, payment processing and the interface, and that MoonPay is merchant of record, taking responsibility for fraud disputes and chargebacks. A partner embeds the widget through MoonPay's web SDKs or a React Native SDK, or generates a URL to show in an iframe or mobile webview. URLs are signed server-side, and webhooks send transaction updates back to the partner's backend. An API supplies minimum and maximum amounts, buy quotes and transaction history.

Users who have already stored payment and identity details with MoonPay can convert faster, and the docs say a wallet can be created from an email address alone for users who do not have one.

The off-ramp reverses the flow. A user picks the asset, currency and amount, signs in with multi-factor authentication, chooses a payout method, completes identity checks if new, and confirms the sale. The partner app then sends the crypto to MoonPay, and the deposit must arrive within 48 hours of the sale being created or it fails with a timeout error.

The Developer Platform is a second path for exchanges and fintechs that want their own interface on MoonPay's APIs, and it includes an option to reuse existing MoonPay accounts rather than onboarding users again. A third path, Headless Onramps, is described below.

Products

On-ramp and off-ramp widget

The widget supports more than 100 cryptocurrencies (on-ramp overview). Payment methods listed in the docs include cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, EUR, GBP and USD bank transfers, PayPal, Venmo and local methods such as PIX. Funding from centralised exchanges is available only with enablement from MoonPay.

Headless Onramps

Launched on 14 May 2026, Headless Onramps let a partner run the whole checkout inside its own product with no MoonPay branding or redirect. MoonPay still operates the payment rails, compliance and identity verification. Verified users can complete a purchase with a single Apple Pay tap, while new users complete a short onboarding frame inline. Launch partners named were Moonshot, Bitcoin.com, Bread and Trust Wallet. The release says the platform launched with Apple Pay, cards and Google Pay across the US and EEA, and also refers to 100+ countries.

MoonPay Enterprise suite

MoonPay's support centre lists a stablecoin-led suite: virtual accounts (named USD, EUR or GBP bank accounts that convert incoming fiat into a chosen stablecoin), onramp, offramp, swaps between stablecoins, global payouts to bank accounts in 30+ currencies, a checkout for merchants accepting stablecoins, OTC for large flows and stablecoin issuance through a regulated US issuer. The page is undated. Our guide on how stablecoin payments work covers the concepts.

MoonPay app

The consumer app adds features over time. Dated entries from the MoonPay changelog include Pots, a staking-style savings feature starting with SOL (23 July 2025), MoonPay Convert for token conversion (8 August 2025), biometric login (5 September 2025) and MoonTags usernames (12 September 2025).

Developer experience and integrations

Developers create an account, take API keys from the dashboard and start in a sandbox (buy-sandbox.moonpay.com). After business verification (KYB), production keys appear in the dashboard. MoonPay publishes clone-ready demo integrations on GitHub, theming options (colours, logo in transactional emails) and pre-fill parameters for wallet address, token, currency, amount and payment method. Its developer home page names MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Ledger, OpenSea and Phantom among partners and refers to more than 500 others.

Supported assets, currencies and regions vary and are listed in MoonPay's support articles rather than in the developer docs.

Pricing model

MoonPay does not give a single rate on the pages we opened. Its UK Terms of Use say fees are shown before an order and accepted by proceeding. Fee types that may apply are a service fee, banking rail fee, network fee, conversion fee, processing fee and, for orders through partner sites, an ecosystem fee. The terms add that MoonPay may change pricing and fees at any time, that orders are generally final and non-refundable, and that its separate pricing and fees disclosures page has full details. Partner commercial terms are not published.

Regulation in brief

MoonPay's UK Terms of Use state that MoonPay (UK) Limited is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority as a cryptoasset business under the Money Laundering Regulations, and that its services are not covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. A MoonPay page also lists MoonPay USA LLC as a registered money service business. Other jurisdictions are not itemised on the pages we opened. EU rules for these services are summarised in our MiCA explainer.

Who it tends to suit

MoonPay is commonly used by wallets, apps and marketplaces that want a hosted or white-label way to let users buy or sell crypto with cards and bank transfers, and by businesses interested in stablecoin accounts and payouts. Individual users may find it through partner apps. Others in this space include Transak, Ramp Network, Banxa and Mercuryo; see the MoonPay vs Transak and Ramp Network vs MoonPay comparisons, our MoonPay alternatives page and the crypto hub.
