Coinbase is a US-founded crypto exchange, broker and custodian listed on Nasdaq, serving individual traders, businesses and institutions. It is licensed as a money transmitter across most US states, holds a New York BitLicense, is authorised under MiCA through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A., and runs e-money businesses supervised by the Central Bank of Ireland and the UK Financial Conduct Authority.
The group describes itself as remote-first with no headquarters, and its 2025 annual report lists consumer trading, the Coinbase Prime institutional platform, several regulated exchanges including Deribit, and the Base blockchain. It also has a commercial agreement with Circle, the issuer of USDC.

Products and services
Consumer trading
The Coinbase app offers Simple and Advanced trading. According to the 10-K, Simple trades generally cost more than Advanced trades. In 2025 the company added US access to stocks, commodity futures, perpetual futures and prediction markets, which it markets as the "Everything Exchange". Equities are offered through Coinbase Capital Markets Corporation, which began introducing US retail stock trades in December 2025 via a carrying broker. A Coinbase-branded credit card launched in 2025. Availability of each product varies by country.
Coinbase One and USDC rewards
Coinbase One is a paid subscription sold in Basic, Preferred and Premium tiers, with reduced trading fees among its benefits. Where local rules allow, Coinbase pays rewards to Coinbase One subscribers and institutional clients who hold USDC.
Staking
At 31 December 2025 Coinbase supported eight staking assets for consumers (ADA, AVAX, ATOM, DOT, ETH, POL, SOL and XTZ), subject to jurisdiction. Consumers had about $7.5 billion staked through the platform and institutional clients more than $15.2 billion through Coinbase Prime on that date. Coinbase keeps a fixed percentage of the rewards.
Institutional: Coinbase Prime and custody
Coinbase Prime bundles trading, financing, staking and custody for funds, corporates and other institutions. Custody runs through Coinbase Custody Trust Company, a New York trust company supervised by NYDFS. The 10-K says Coinbase generally aims to keep no more than 2% of assets under custody in hot wallets.
Exchanges and derivatives
The group operates four venues, per the 10-K: Coinbase Exchange (spot, 360+ assets), Coinbase International Exchange (perpetual futures and spot, 200+ assets, licensed in Bermuda), Coinbase Derivatives Exchange (35+ futures contracts, CFTC-designated) and Deribit (options, perpetuals, dated futures and spot, 15+ assets). Deribit FZE operates under supervision of Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority.
Base and the USDC agreement
Base is an Ethereum layer 2 network built by Coinbase. The company earns sequencer fees on each Base transaction, and the self-custodial Base App replaced the old Coinbase Wallet brand. Under its August 2023 agreement with Circle, Coinbase earns revenue linked to USDC in circulation both on and off its platform; the initial term is three years. For more on USDC issuance, see our Circle profile.
Fees and pricing
We could not open Coinbase's public fee pages on 3 November 2026, so we do not quote rates here. The structure below comes from the company's 2025 annual report.
| Fee type | How it works (10-K, FY2025) |
|---|---|
| Consumer trading | Volume-based transaction fee plus a spread, depending on trade type |
| Simple vs Advanced | Simple trading fees are generally higher than Advanced |
| Coinbase One | Monthly or annual subscription; includes reduced trading fees |
| Staking | Fixed percentage commission on staking rewards |
| Base | Sequencer fees per transaction |
Exact rates, spreads and tier thresholds are shown in the app before each trade and differ by country. Compare them with the published schedules of Kraken and Bitpanda before committing funds.
Markets, currencies and payment methods
In the US, Coinbase, Inc. operates under state licences. Its own notes say the Louisiana money transmission licence does not cover virtual currency, the Tennessee and Virginia licences do not cover virtual currency transmission, and Nevada does not license virtual currency services.
In the EU and EEA, crypto services are provided under the Luxembourg MiCA licence. The AMF lists Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. as authorised to serve French clients under the free provision of services, covering custody, exchange against funds or other crypto-assets, order execution and transmission, placing, and transfers. Fiat e-money and payment services in the EEA run through Coinbase Ireland Limited, which the Central Bank of Ireland register shows passported on a freedom of services basis to 29 countries, with card payment execution and credit transfers among its listed services.
In the UK, CB Payments, Ltd handles e-money and is the registered cryptoasset business. UK readers should be aware of the rules on crypto financial promotions.

Coinbase spreads its regulated activity across separate legal entities. The table lists the main ones we could verify on 3 November 2026. The US state list is long, so it is summarised here; the full list sits on Coinbase's own disclosure page.

The 10-K also lists a Singapore major payment institution licence, AUSTRAC registration in Australia, a Bermuda Class F licence, registrations in Argentina, Canada and India, and a conditional VASP licence in Dubai held by Deribit. We did not open those registers, so they are not in the table.
To check any of these yourself, search the entity name on the FCA register, the CSSF entity search and ESMA's interim MiCA register. Our guide on how to check a financial licence walks through each step, and our MiCA explainer covers what the EU licence allows.
