What drove the quarter

Reuters said spending in the United States stayed resilient, supported by a strong labour market and wage growth. The FIFA World Cup, held from 11 June to 19 July, brought many visitors to the United States and added activity on Visa's network, according to the report.

Cross border volume, which tracks international travel and online shopping across borders, grew faster than domestic spending. Visa also returned $25.6 billion to shareholders over the year through buybacks and dividends, and its board raised the quarterly dividend by 16% to $0.780 a share.

Visa shares fell more than 1% in extended trading after the results, Reuters reported.

Stablecoins move from pilot to volume

On the earnings call, Chief Executive Ryan McInerney said Visa's stablecoin settlement run rate had passed $25 billion in annualised volume, about ten times the level of a year earlier, and that the network now supports 10 blockchains. A run rate is an annualised figure based on current activity, not the total settled during the year.

For banks and fintechs, stablecoin settlement lets them pay Visa in a digital dollar token instead of a traditional bank transfer, which can work outside banking hours. It remains small next to Visa's total volume, but it is growing quickly.

Why it matters

Visa and Mastercard sit underneath most card payments worldwide, so their results are a good read on consumer spending. The stablecoin numbers show the card networks are adding blockchain settlement to their existing rails rather than being replaced by it. See our Visa profile and our guide to how card payments work.
