Adyen shares fell about 12% in early Amsterdam trading on 28 October after the Dutch payments company cut its 2026 profit margin target, even though third quarter revenue beat forecasts, Reuters reported. Net revenue rose 23% to 738.1 million euros, but Adyen lowered its 2026 EBITDA margin target to 50% from about 52% to pay for faster hiring.

Why the margin target came down
Co-Chief Executive Ingo Uytdehaage said the lower target reflects more hiring as Adyen moves beyond payments into billing and loyalty software, much of it to support two businesses it bought this year, Talon. One for promotions and Orb for billing. He said demand for billing tools is rising as companies look for ways to charge customers for their use of AI models.
Adyen also dropped its medium term EBITDA goal "to retain flexibility", according to Reuters, and said it will set out 2027 objectives with its full year results in February.
Market reaction
The fall extended Adyen's share losses this year to roughly 40%, Reuters said. Degroof Petercam called the margin cut a nasty surprise, noting that guidance had been updated only one quarter earlier for the two acquisitions and that a new finance chief had yet to start.
Why it matters
Adyen's payments business is still growing faster than most rivals, with volume up 30%. The question for investors is how much it will spend to become a broader commerce software platform. See our Adyen profile and Adyen vs Stripe.
